Bangladesh communal violence: Communal tensions escalated in Bangladesh amid the Durga Puja. Authorities said that an angry mob damaged more than 60 houses and burned down 20 homes of Hindus. A social media post triggered the violence initially. According to local media, the arson attack by a mob of over 100 people took place late Sunday in a village in Rangpur district’s Pirganj Upazila, about 255 kilometers from Dhaka. The police rushed to a fishermen’s neighborhood. However, tension mounted over a rumor that a young Hindu man of the village had ‘dishonored religion’ in a Facebook post. Assistant Police Superintendent Mohammad Kamruzzaman told local media. 

Police said no casualties in Bangladesh communal violence 

The police said that no casualties had been reported in Bangladesh communal violence. Meanwhile, police arrested more than 50 and launched a search operation for more suspects under a “combing operation” collaboration with other security forces. The officer stood guard around the man’s home, and the attackers set fire to other homes nearby. The Fire Service Control Room said that their report from the scene indicates that the mob burnt 29 residential houses. It added two kitchens, two barns, and 20 haystacks belonging to 15 different owners in Pirganj’s Majhipara,

The arson incident occurred amid rising communal tension over an alleged blasphemy incident at a Durga Puja. It led to attacks on Hindu temples and clashes between vandals and the police in Cumilla, Chandpur, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Moulvibazar, Gazipur, Chapainawabganj, Feni, and other districts. Police arrested Dozens of people over the attacks and the spread of communal hatred on social media. However, the concerned authorities should instantly look into the matter before the situation gets worse. Social Media authorities should ban these types of hatred. The majority community should tolerate the religious feelings of minorities.
